The University ofCoperihagen, Denmark, is organizing a conference on the subject of comics and culture on 24-25 September, 1998. The overall objective of the conference is to contribute to the theoretical debate about comics as a unique media in the cultural context of the 2Oth century. One focus of the conference will be on the specific mode of expression and aesthetics of comics, as well as their positioning in a cultural context. At this early stage in planning, though, we are open to all suggestions, especially those involving more recent theoretical frameworks and ideas. The conference will consist of a number of papers presented by researchers and Ph.D. students, which we hope will provoke discussion about the various aspects of research into comics and between the different centres dedicated to this research in Europe. Invited speakers: Benoit Peeters (B), Thierry Groensteen (F), Roger Sabin (UK), Philippe Marion (B) and Pierre Fresnault-Deruelle (F). The conference is planned to last two days. However, if interest is such that we need to extend it, we could make it span over three, including September, 26th. The language of the conference will be English.Registration: if you are interested in participating in the conference with a paper, please send us an abstract of max two pages which clearly states the problem addressed and some indication of the conclusions. All abstracts will be evaluated for acceptance by the organizers. The presentation of a paper should be planned to last 45 minutes. It is our intention to have the papers published afier the conference.
