Story of a Mother – Story of an Adaptation - Bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen's Birth

To celebrate the bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish story-teller, the Belgian Comic Strip Centre has decided to present an exhibition about Peter Madsen, a Danish comic strip author whose works are particularly popular in northern Europe. Madsen has adapted Andersen's "The Story of a Mother" (1847) for comic strips. It is an initiation story about motherhood and the acceptance of death. In it, a mother is first forced to give up her sick child to Death and then does battle with Death to bring her child back to life. Madsen's masterly adaptation is just as moving as Andersen's tale, thus proving that both fairy-tales and comic strips possess an artistic value of their own. By adapting Andersen's story Madsen shows that the Danish story-teller's tales have lost none of their original power, and by using Madsen's story as the focus of its exhibition the Belgian Comic Strip Centre wishes to bring homage to a northern folk genius. In cooperation with the Danish Cultural Institute Benelux – www.hca2005.com
From 8th March 2005 until 12th June 2005
Independent Comic Strips

In collaboration with several experts, the Belgian Centre for Comic Strip Art will tread the new ground of independent comic strips. Without necessarily disavowing the pioneers of the Ninth Art, young authors are constantly shifting the boundaries of the genre. This will be an exhibition to learn more about this subject, or to discover a world where the conventional rules of contemporary comics are more or less freely interpreted.
From 14th June until 18th September 2005
Around the World with Jommeke - 50 Years of Jommeke

50 years ago Jef Nys created his famous hero with the blonde fringe. Jommeke soon became one of the most popular and traditional comic strip heroes in Flanders. This brave young boy loves to travel the world in search of adventure, sometimes accompanied by Flip, Filiberke, the Miekes and the absent-minded professor Gobelijn. Whether the story takes place in Africa, Australia, Antarctica or America, Jommeke and his friends always manage to get out of trouble. In this exhibition Jommeke will take visitors on a journey around the world, while at the same time giving them an overview of 50 years of adventures.
From 4th October to 11th December 2005
Comic Strip Artists of the Spanish Democracy - Thirty Years of Democracy in Spain (1975-2005)
In Franco's day Spanish comics were aimed primarily at children. With the institution of democracy and the abolition of censorship, the doors to the world of authorial comics – never before seen in Spain – were opened wide. Comic Strip Artists of the Spanish Democracy aims to show the evolution of the adult comic strip: its discoveries, daring, genres and tendencies. The greatest Spanish names of the past thirty years will be presented by means of original drawings: Carlos Gimenez, Daniel Torres, Prado etc. In cooperation with the Institut Cervantès.
From 13th December 2005 to 9th April 2006
Warehouse with Style - Art Nouveau in the Comic Strip Department

The Belgian Comic Strip Centre (BCSC) represents an essential link between the 9th Art and Art Nouveau. From December 2005 until April 2006 a temporary exhibition will put the representation of a Belle Epoque warehouse in comics in the spotlight. As the history of the BCSC itself is the subject of this exhibition, extracts will be shown from the works of comic strip authors who have chosen this 9th Art temple as a background for their stories. Also on show will be illustrations bringing homage to the BCSC. This exhibition will be part of a programme of activities celebrating the centenary of the former Waucquez warehouse, currently the home of the Belgian Comic Strip Centre (30 March 2006).
