CALVIN AND HOBBES: SUNDAY PAGES 1985-1995 - FEBRUARY 16 - APRIL 14, 2002 - Opening Reception, February 21, 6:00-8:00 PM. The first ever exhibition of original art devoted to Bill Watterson1s popular comic strip Calvin and Hobbes bounds into the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco! Calvin and Hobbes chronicles the adventures of a 6-year-old boy, Calvin, and his stuffed tiger, Hobbes, who comes to life whenever he and Calvin are alone. The strip, first syndicated in 1985, was carried in 2400 newspapers when Watterson decided to retire it at the end of 1995 in order to pursue other artistic endeavors. With Calvin and Hobbes, Watterson stretched the limits of the comic strip medium, combining beautiful drawing, perfect timing and a creative use of panels. In 1986, Watterson became the youngest recipient of the prestigious Reuben Award for "Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year" from the National Cartoonists Society. He won the award again in 1988, and was nominated for the honor in 1992. The exhibition runs from February 16 through April 14, 2002 and will feature 36 original Sunday comic strips selected by creator Bill Watterson from his personal collection. The exhibition was organized by the Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library, where it is on display through January 15, 2002. The Cartoon Art Museum is the only other venue in the United States to receive this rare exhibition. An exhibition catalogue reprints all of the works on display. It also includes an essay by Watterson about his work on the comic strip and his comments on each of the strips illustrated. Published by Andrews McMeel, the catalogue (ISBN 0-7407-2136-6) retails for $12.95 at the Cartoon Art Museum and bookstores nationwide. Bill Watterson will make no public appearances related to this exhibition and no other products or publications are authorized. Image: © 2001 Bill Watterson.
