The fourth edition of the Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation will be held in the city of La Laguna, Tenerife, with the main support of the island’s Council through the Tenerife Film Commission. Its program of parallel activities begins this Monday, May 10. In fact, the main Ibero-American animation awards, created in 2018 to highlight animation from Latin America, Spain and Portugal, will have a full schedule of events to be held both online and on-site.
Through meetings, round tables, workshops, conferences and presentations, the Quirino Awards will once again bring together the best animation projects in Ibero-America. In addition, it will encourage analysis of the challenges faced by the region, boost the production of works and promote its talents. This year’s edition will end on May 29 with an on-site ceremony to announce the winners in the nine Quirino categories: Feature Film, Series, Short Film, School Short Film, Commissioned Work, Video Game Animation, Sound Design and Original Music, Visual Development and Animation Design.
The inaugural event of the Awards, in online format, will be in charge of La Liga de la Animación Iberoamericana, an event alliance created by Quirino Awards together with Animation! Ventana Sur (Argentina) and Pixelatl Festival (Mexico) to promote the creation and development of animation projects regionally. In addition to announcing news about this alliance, the presentation will include the pitching of the winning project of its last call for development and internationalization support, the feature film “Olivia and the Mysteries”, directed by Uruguayan Juan Carve.
In an attempt to bring Ibero-American animation closer to audiences, the finalists for Best Short Film and Best School Short Film will be available online from May 10 to 23 through Retina Latina (Latin America and the Caribbean) and Filmin (Spain and Portugal) platforms. The shorts “Elo” by Alexandra Ramires (Portugal), “Homeless Home” by Alberto Vázquez (Spain), “Roberto” by Carmen Córdoba González (Spain), “La Bestia”, co-directed by Ram Tamez (Mexico) Alfredo Gerard Kuttikatt & Marlijn Van Nuenen, “Memories for Sale” by Manuel Lopez (Costa Rica), and “Le retour des vagues”, co-directed by Alejandra Guevara Cervera (Mexico), Manon Cansell, Edward Kurchevsky, Francisco Moutinho de Magalhães (Portugal) & Hortense Mariano, will be available through both platforms.
Professional activities
Among the activities planned for professionals, and as part of the Quirino Awards’ commitment to boosting and structuring the sector, two round tables will be broadcast online via the Quirino Awards’ Facebook Live, with the main topic being the distribution and financing of projects.
On Tuesday, May 11, Christophe Vidal ( Deputy General Manager of Natixis Coficiné), Yago Fandiño ( Director of Children’s Content at RTVE), Marta Hernández Calzada (Financial Director of the production company Tandem Films), and Pato Escala (Executive Producer of Punkrobot, a studio member of the Latin American alliance Los Amigos) will reflect on the different ways of financing animation projects in a discussion that will be moderated by Francisco Menéndez Nadal, from WELAW.

At the second roundtable, on Tuesday, May 18, representatives from three international sales agencies will examine the changes facing the sector in terms of animation distribution. The activity will be moderated by Silvina Cornillón (Animation! Ventana Sur) and will include the participation of Juan Torres (International Sales Director of Latido Films), Florencia Gasparini (Sales Executive of Cinema Management Group, CMG), and Antunes João (CEO of Big Picture).
In this new edition, the Quirino Awards will once again be a meeting point for Ibero-American associations of animation producers and creators and the Ibermedia Program. In addition, this year includes working tables in which institutions, professionals and training initiatives will share their own experiences in the production of new technologies and formats in order to present useful proposals, learn from what has worked and has been successful and what has not, to analyze patterns for new possible lines of aid for digital creation from Ibermedia. The conclusions of these working groups will be presented on May 27 at the Antiguo Convento Santo Domingo de La Laguna and will be broadcast worldwide via streaming.
Industry activities will conclude with the Co-Production and Business Forum, which will hold its fourth edition in two phases: online (May 19 and 20) and on-site (May 28 and 29). Open to animation production companies, purchasing agents, distributors, TV channels and investors, the Forum will be attended by around one hundred companies that will hold close to 800 business meetings. Adult Swim, Discovery Kids, The Walt Disney Company, Filmin, RTVE, Pakapaka, Globo, HITN, KiKA, Indie Sales, Cake Entertainment, Toonz Media Group, PGS, Dandelooo, El Reino Infantil and Sola Media are among the channels and companies that will be participating in this forum organized in collaboration with ICEX, Animation From Spain and PROEXCA.
Online chats with the finalists
As in its previous edition, the Quirino Awards present a series of online chats with the finalists of four of the nine award categories to get to know the creators behind the selected works.
Focusing on the finalists in the Best Short Film category, the first program of the series will be broadcast on May 13 and will feature the participation of directors Carmen Córdoba González (“Roberto”, Spain) and Alexandra Ramires (“Tie”, Portugal, France), and director Alberto Vázquez (“Homeless Home”, Spain, France).
On May 17, it will be the turn of the finalists in the Best Video Game Animation category: Cadabra Games (“Adore”, Brazil), Tequila Works (“GYLT”, Spain), and Cosmic Brew Studios (“El niño antimateria”, Argentina).
On May 21, the program will feature the finalists for Best Series: Andrés Lieban, co-director of “Count on me” (Brazil), Bernardita Ojeda, director of “Petit 2nd Season” (Chile, Argentina, Colombia), Iván Agenjo, producer of “I, Elvis Riboldi” (Spain, France), and the brothers Emilio and Jesús Gallego, producers of “The Zurfs” (Spain).
The series of chats ends on May 24 with a program dedicated to the finalists in the Best Feature Film category, with the participation of Miguel Ángel Uriegas, producer of “A Costume for Nicholas” (Mexico), Leopoldo Aguilar, director of “Cranston Academy: Monster Zone” (Mexico, United Kingdom), Germán Acuña Delgadillo, director of ” Nahuel and the Magic Book” (Chile, Brazil), and Cristina Pineda Antúnez, producer of “Xico’s Journey” (Mexico).

The awards are named after the creator of the first animated feature film in history, the Italian-Argentine Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed “El Apostol”.
