English version
Following its success, the exhibition of Joe Sacco & Art Spiegelman has been extended until January 17.
We are very pleased to announce that all 165 works have been sold, and that the total amount of funds raised in support of UNICEF exceeds €80,000.
“Art and I worked hard on our three-page collaboration and in some ways the effort obscured the accomplishment. But seeing Galerie Martel’s magnificently displayed exhibition of our work was incredibly satisfying. It reminded me not just how much we struggled on the project but also how well we struggled. The exhibition and the response from the public brought that home.”
Joe Sacco
“Both Joe and I agreed that there would be something obscene about profiting from all the suffering that occasioned our strip. (When I did Maus, the work was a complete anomaly and I assumed we’d have to publish it ourselves. I had absolutely no economic motive to spend 13 years on it. ) I was so impressed with the way Galerie Martel staged the new work: one wall of comics by Joe, and one wall dominated by an outsider artist, me, making repetitive compulsive sketches and studies. It made the visuals a form of communication itself. People responded to the show with interest and obviously took pride in this particular way of passing the hat.”
Art Spiegelman
“UNICEF France warmly thanks Joe Sacco and Art Spiegelman, as well as Galerie Martel, for their generosity and solidarity in this meaningful initiative supporting UNICEF’s actions on behalf of children in Gaza. This comes at a time when our teams on the ground are racing against the clock to protect children from the effects of winter, compounded by those of war.”
Ann April, Executive Director of UNICEF France
