Alain Saint-Ogan b.1895

www.afnews.info segnala: Alain Saint-Ogan (7 August 1895 – 22 July 1974, France) was a comics author and artist, sometimes called a founding father of French comics. His first cartoons were published in 1913, and after serving in World War I he resumed cartooning.

He created the famous strip ‘Zig et Puce’ in “Dimanche Illustré” in 1925. A penguin character in that strip, named Alfred, became a popular mascot and the annual award at the Angoulême festival was originally called ‘The Alfred’.

He edited and contributed to “Cadet-Revue” in the 1930s and from 1941 he did the same at the children’s magazine “Benjamin”.

He supported French colonialism, in his personal life and in his art. He contributed to the 1931 Exposition Coloniale, even having Zig and Puce attend the event. He contributed to a parody comic mocking the Communist party’s anti-imperialist critique of the exposition.

During World War II, he was active in the Resistance. After the war, in addition to his comics, he hosted a radio show, became a television producer, and wrote novels and two memoirs.
