    Franco Fossati passed away
    Remebering Franco, by Gianfranco Goria
    Remembering Franco by Gianfranco Goria
Franco Fossati, comics historian, founding member of Anonima Fumetti (Italian Cartoonist Society), dear friend and much more to many of us... suddenly died on the 2nd of June 1996, killed by a thrombosis at a mere 50. As I came home to write this, tears and rain mixed; I kept telling myself it wasn't true. Meanwhile, memories crowded in my heart, all of them so exciting! The many projects we planned together crowded in my mind, too: an essay on the history of comics, at last done the way he had always wanted it; we were now able to do it--we had even found a publisher; or the comics museum; or the Italian centre for comics (which is currently here on the web, but which is about to become physical and I'd like it to have his name); or a load of other initiatives for the Anonima. But also, as well as all this: a trip to Brussels; another expedition to Lyon (peppered with Fossati-branded witty remarks) to pick up more comics; Angouleme again (next year, without him, damn!); the new series of his comics strips (yes-- Franco is also a comics character himself!) being worked on by Antonio Lapone; and all the work he was putting into this web site, and much more... I like to remember him through the caricature by his friend Bruno Cannucciari (who drew the first series of the adventures of Franco & Bruno) and through one of the joking pictures that we used to take of each other... I am sorry to clutter this page with words that aren't as beautiful as I would have liked. He was so good at writing! But undoubtedly there will be others to say how much he was worth, to tell all that he gave to the world of comics with so much humility, passion and professionalism. So many of us, today, have felt a lump in our throats and silence all around us. I just want to say that a dear friend has been taken away from me, one who gave me a lot and with whom I wanted to live so many many many more exciting and wonderful moments. I can't say any more right now. My fingers stumble on the keyboard and I keep restarting again and again. And I feel a great emptiness, that I'll have to fill with all that he left me.
