E' in mostra fino al 4 gennaio 2009, la bella collezione dei disegni originali (e acquarelli) dell'elefantino Babar (creato da Jean de Brunhoff nel 1931), alla Morgan Library & Museum di New York. Ma, com'é successo tempo fa per Tintin in Congo (1930-1931, accusato di colonialismo e financo di razzismo, arrivando persino a spostarlo, in alcune librerie, dalla sezione bambini alla sezione adulti), qualcuno sembra, con l'occasione, volerne chiedere la distruzione. Motivo? Sarebbe apologia del colonialismo (per il razzismo, si vedrà). Intanto, se nessuno darà fuoco agli originali in un tardivo impeto antimperialista, la mostra è aperta. In ogni caso, che, in quegli anni, colonialismo e razzismo fossero all'ordine del giorno e ben integrati nel "comune sentire" degli occidentali, è cosa tristemente incontestabile (e ci ricorda quanto si debba fare attenzione a non considerare il "comune sentire" e le "tradizioni" come cosa giusta a priori). Quanto ad oggi, invece, sappiamo che il razzismo è diffuso in ogni landa, senza più confini né preferenze per il colore della pelle, il colonialismo ha cambiato pelle e lo schiavismo (denunciato da Tintin nell'albo Coke in Stock del 1958, per restare in ambito fumettistico) ce lo troviamo, in forme diverse, persino sotto casa. La soluzione a queste piaghe è censurare le storie per bambini degli anni trenta? O forse è meglio pubblicarle con relative note e parlarne, spiegando per bene le cose ai giovani d'oggi? Chissà. Intanto nel sito della Morgan potete anche ammirare la bozza originale completa del famosissimo libro, scritta e disegnata a mano. Sul resto varrà la pena riflettere seriamente.

In the past few decades, a series of critics on the left, most notably the Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman, have indicted Babar in the course of a surprisingly resilient and hydra-headed argument about the uses of imagery and the subtleties of imperialist propaganda.
